Engraving Fonts, Layout & Finish Guide

Every personalised item is engraved to order with attention to detail and balance.
Font choice, layout and finish all influence how your engraving will appear.
Use this guide to compare engraving styles, understand layout recommendations and choose the most appropriate option for your occasion.

Understanding Reign & Cyphers

Many British military crests include a Royal Cypher.
The cypher represents the reigning monarch at the time the insignia design was authorised.

Where two reign options are available, you will usually notice that:

The crown design changes, and
The initials beneath the crown (the cypher) are different.

For example:

Queen Elizabeth II
King Charles III

Selecting the correct reign ensures the crest reflects the appropriate monarch.

If you are unsure which reign applies to your chosen regiment, please contact us before ordering.

Hip Flask Engraving Layout Tips

The engraving area on our hip flasks is the same size as a standard 6oz hip flask. Because the front has a gentle curve, layout and font choice can affect how clear and balanced your personalised hip flask engraving appears.

Keep lines balanced

  • Shorter lines usually work best at the top and bottom of the engraving area.
  • Longer lines tend to sit best around the centre for a balanced appearance.
  • Very long single lines may need adjusting to maintain readability.

Message length

  • For best results, we recommend 4–6 lines of text on one side.
  • Longer messages can still be engraved, however the font size may need to be reduced.
  • If needed, we may split longer sentences into multiple shorter lines to improve layout and clarity.

Font choice guidance

  • Times New Roman – a classic and versatile choice with excellent readability.
  • Copperplate Gothic – ideal for formal or military-style engravings, particularly in capitals.
  • Amazone Script – best suited to names and short personal messages. Script fonts are not always suitable for service numbers or longer military text.
  • Arial – a clean, modern font offering simple and clear engraving.

Capital letters and abbreviations

  • Full capitals can look strong for military engravings but may feel less personal for gift messages.
  • Rank abbreviations (for example: TPR, CPL, SGT) work best in traditional or formal fonts.
  • Script fonts are generally clearer in title case rather than all capitals.

Entering your engraving

  • Please enter your text exactly as you would like it engraved, using a new line for each line.
  • Avoid placing all wording on one long line, as this may reduce the overall font size.
